A2. Spring 2016, page 1

As school year 2015-2016 comes to a close, let's take a look at some of the community service accomplishments of our volunteers during the spring 2016 semester.

Walid Ahmed and Tahmina Keya, also a tenth grader, volunteer during Forest Restoration Volunteer Days.
Tenth Grader Walid Ahmed Shows a Passion for the
Conservation of Urban Green Spaces
Walid Ahmed did not miss a single Saturday opportunity to volunteer at Van Cortlandt Park during the spring 2016 monthly Forest Restoration Days sponsored by the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy. He also was a member of the Van Cortlandt Park Ranger Conservation Corps and was accepted into the Summer 2016 Urban Ecology Teen Internship. During this internship, students work in the field and attend a college class on conservation in the environment at CUNY Lehman College. Eleventh grader Kadiatou Barry was also accepted into this competitive program.

Free the Girls! Donation Drive

On March 24, 2016 students in Ms. Natalie Yasmin Soto’s Friday Forum Club made a trip to Journelle, a small designer undergarment shop, to deliver goods for the Free the Girls! donation drive. Free The Girls is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides job opportunities for survivors of sex trafficking. They collect gently used bras and donate them to the women as starting inventory for their own business selling the bras. Journelle serves as a collection site every March on behalf of Free the Girls. At the end of the month, all of the bras collected were shipped to Mozambique. This was the second year the Friday Forum Club carried out a Free the Girls! donation drive. Students participating in this year’s event were: Lizaveta Markouskaya, Maria Hernandez, Betty Rezabala, Gabriela Arias, Natara Fletcher, Rosanny Rosario, Saira Majid, Karla Jimenez, Leslie Diaz, Wisleiry Lantigua, and Yanileysi Cepeda.
